You're generalizing it from something. Because the vast majority of americans don't talk like that. The only place you might see it is from people raised in southern states or parents who where from the southern states originally. Which is way less than half the american population. I would estimate that at most 20% of the population (if that) say cawl. My sister in law is from the south (georgia) she doesnt even say cawl. But she does say funny things like when talking to my mom she says Ms Liz or my mama says this or I"m fixing to. Hehehe funny stuff. But she doesnt talk retarded with messed up words like cawl.

I guess it could be done, though it wouldn't be easy.

First off, you'd have to fix everyone's spelling, because that'd be the easiest thing to do. "Realize" to "realise" et cetera. That could be started off with spell checkers (US English options removed in computer programs).

Second off, you'd have to teach everyone the received pronunciation or somesuch. Good, standard way of saying things. No more Southern twangs, everyone sounds like the BBC. This'd take massive reeducation, perhaps tax refunds for people who can prove that they have made themselves sound British. If the New Yorkers still want to sound funny, there are plenty of British accents from which to choose that still wind up with a superior pronunciation. The New Yorkers could sound like Scots if they please.

Third off, introduce some of the developments in British English that never really caught on in America, i.e. particularly good neologisms and other words created since the Revolution that never really did or have had a chance to catch on. Languages seem to evolve more properly, rather than corrupting quite so fast, in their original locations of inception.

Yes and while we're at it how about some one fixes Australian language to make it english again. (sarcasm) If every one stuck with the same language and didnt allow for charge or the language to evolve chances are we would all be speaking Latin.

Sarcasm or not, I actually do hold the belief that the world would be better off if everyone spoke Latin, and there were an orderly procedure for expansion. It's so...logical.

The sarcasm was in the australian comment not the Latin part. The Latin comment was in if we where going to be so picky about languages being incorrect then British people should first start speaking latin as the primary language.

I think there'd be less international confusion if we Americans undid all the stupid stuff into which Webster (God bless him) et al bilked our ancestors.
