Except that lots of people who know nothing about computers would be all "whatthecrap I didn't put that .bmp on the end of my filename this stupid computer" and "whythecrap is that .exe on the end of all these pretty icons blasted comp rename-select".exe"-delete now why won't the program run durrrr" so Microsoft felt the hide extension thing was justified.

You missed it. :) My point was that Microsoft caters to the ignorant, and Loriel's (facetious) point was that catering to the ignorant kills evolution by allowing them to remain in the gene pool.
