Or, have someone like me make the levels, like the new Zormite Castle. ;)

Lyndzey 10-26-2001 06:43 PM

I'm horrible at inside, but I think I'm ok at outside levels...I've worked on a lot of different servers including Faheria and ToT

My level...

Slaktmaster 10-26-2001 06:56 PM

Yea, they shouldn't go by the shore. I'm still working on getting better, this one was made about 2 months ago, but I have no more time to make levels.

Slaktmaster 10-26-2001 07:06 PM

:(
i dont have much time any longer either, not getting better any more. but my levels are good enough, especially the insides. i really hope i will be able to finish my pw. ;)

Hey, you made the outside levels. I had to spend about 1 hour fixing all of them up. They are currently fine. Now, the inside level. That is a mine-type level. There are hardly any mine tiles. So sue me.

Oh, and don't ':-P' me or I won't do them.

lvl making does require skill
maybe not as much as NPC Scripting but it does require skill
anyone can throw together a lvl but making that lvl eye catching and original is what makes a good lvl maker a good lvl maker
another thing lvl making requires is patience
it requires a lot of patience

Birdbird_0 10-26-2001 11:28 PM

The same thing could be said about Anything really, it depends on the person, how adept and how comfertable they are with that certain operation. Yes level making is alot harder than you say it is, so is gani making, gfx, scripting and so on, you can't just generalize level making. Level making is a sort of drawing, but than you could say that drawing takes little or no talent, but than again, you can't generalize or base that on a few people, for some people drawnig is compleatly natral, for others they cant even put a pencil on the stupid papaer.

I can't make levels ;\

i have worked on that lvl fixing the tile errors i could see and changed the path anything else that would make it nicer

FatherDante 10-27-2001 12:11 AM

I'm sorry man, you can't kid yourself... anyone can make levels. These days, good level makers are people who make their own tiles. That takes a lot of talent and patience, and a level made with unique tiles will always get a lot more attention and look better than a level made the easy way with the same old ones.

Level making = easy
level quality = absolutely subjective

Graphic making = difficult
graphic quality = somewhat subjective

Programming = Extremely difficult
Script quality = almost wholly objective

That in mind, it's obvious that programming is where the real talent is...

I am VERY SORRY IF I DO NOT PICK UP PROGRAMMING INFORMATION WELL WHICH MEANS I AM OBVIOUSLY UNTALENTED AT ANYTHING.

Okay, yeah, I think I need vacation.

FatherDante 10-27-2001 01:08 AM

Hey, Vermain, there's a lot of things to be talented outside of Graal... I think your sense of humour is quality far higher in quality than any of the above.

Gotta keep things in perspective, after all.

No, there were about 5-10 tile errors in it. Also, I added some stuff.

No I think much different actually, it takes MANY hours of practice to become a good level maker. I woudn't even wanna think about how many hours it took me to get this good. It is definately not easy to become a great level maker.

FatherDante 10-27-2001 10:32 AM

I think what you mean is you don't want to realize how much time you wasted becoming a "good" level maker. Calm down and learn a little humility...

He's right though Dante. Being a level maker is not hard, but being a good one is. Making a level that would catch someone's eye actually DOES take skill.

Sorry Dante, I couldn't recognize the file names right away.

FatherDante 10-27-2001 10:59 AM

I'm sorry, I'm simply not impressed. The earth's edge tiles don't even match up well.

However, if you made the tileset for that level, I would be very impressed.

The fact of the matter is, making levels slightly different with a little rondomnity doesn't mean you are great. Of course it is a marked improvement over pure predefined objects, but it's still just pointing and clicking. You can't do anything truly original without designing your own tiles.

And what if you cannot make tiles due to ot being good at graphics, it's a whole different thing.

FatherDante 10-27-2001 11:10 AM

If you can't make tiles, obviously you are not as talented as the person who can make tiles. Isn't that obvious? It's like saying
"Why aren't I as good an NPC scripter as Kaimetsu if all I know is how to use if/then statements?"

yoshee15 10-27-2001 11:17 AM

I just believe creating graphics and designing levels is a whole different thing.

FatherDante 10-27-2001 11:28 AM

Look, if I am extremely good at if/then statements, I may be able to come up with a creative way to do a ton of stuff with them.

But my scripts will be 1200 lines long while Kaimetsu's will be 150 lines long. Does that mean that because of my "creativity" and dedication to perfecting an extremely limited skill I am a better NPC programmer than kaimetsu? No! Kaimetsu can do 10 times as much, with more efficient code.

That's what level making is about. You may be very good at using the same old tiles but you still have a very narrow and easy to learn skill, and you will never be able to do as much as the person who makes his own tiles.
