No, but you actually have to be good to even get the job.

No, this isn't sarcasm for whoever gave me the bad rep.

Old_Days 01-11-2010 02:49 AM

*sigh*

Why dont we finish the current task of making the server than getting an erection over classic iphone, and wishing you were like that.

You guys dont know your goals or apparently dont have any.

The goals of this project are:
  • To create an fun, self-supporting arcade-style playerworld based off of Era, where iPhone/iPod Touch users and possibly PC users will be able to enjoy a casual modern-themed Graal server.
  • To motivate the Era development team and speed the process development, especially with graphics. The application will be using a revised tileset which will eventually be brought to main Era with the conclusion of the dev project.
  • To put the Era Dev scripting systems to a test, especially the overhauled item system, to be certain that they won't fall apart when they are released on the Era main server.
  • To bring new players to the main Era server, as well as Graal, by properly advertising and promoting the desktop version of Graal. We expect to be able to get at least 200 players during peak times, based off the recent trends of the Classic iPhone server.

DazJenova 01-12-2010 01:51 PM

Hopefully this will attract more people to play era as mostly everyone these days has an iPod

GarethOmni 01-13-2010 02:50 AM

Are you bored at home, do you want to play your favorite Era instruments while riding the bus? Do you want to ask people to mug you while playing out the Jigglypuff song on the flute?
Try Era Iphone today!

Patent Pending :P

Vman13x 01-13-2010 05:34 AM

Lol gareth, mugging in real life or in era? I'm guessing real life :)

Chris sed it'll take them between 2 weeks - 1 month. It's been 1 week and a half I think? anyways 1 month isn't that much, so I'm having hopes.

I JUST HOPE THEY DON'T GET ADDICTED TO THE IPHONE VERSION AND FORGET ABOUT THEIR HOMIES ON ERA PC :(:(:(.

They're making this to boost the population of Era on the PC, so I guess you shouldn't worry :)

Which Era needs!

Frankie 01-14-2010 06:37 PM

If you're trying to attract iPhone/iPod touch players to the computer version, wouldn't it make more sense to finish the Era that you've been working on for the past months first? You'll wind up setting high standards with this new flashy arcade version, only to then take a dump on new potential customers by welcoming them to a server that is boring and extremely unfriendly to newbies (which in this case is extremely important!)

Also keep in mind that Graal isn't exactly cheap. If I only spent 1 dollar on a game from the app store, I definitely wouldn't go and pay 35+ dollars for the computer version. That's just my opinion of course, but to expect 200 players at peak times because of this release is laughable.

Don't get me wrong, it sounds like an awesome project and I wish I could play it when it's finished (unfortunately I can't since I don't have either an iPhone or an iPod touch) but I just don't think it's going to attract the amount of players as you think it will.

Venom_Fish 01-15-2010 01:26 AM

It won't. Lol.

Agreed also.

Not everyone has 600 bucks in their pocket anyways ready to whip out to buy an iphone.

This idea is just as stupid as making a graal game for nintendo DS, then asking target to sell the case...rofl.

Wake the **** up and smell the roses guys, Era staff is gearing up to ditch everyone on the computer server so they can all migrate over to the iphone server...if they ever actually do it.

cbk1994 01-19-2010 09:09 AM

Unfortunately, we've hit a few snags with development, and things have been moving along much slower than we've expected.

Since the iPhone server will be sharing the same overworld and tileset as new Era, and since the majority of the scripting work is already done on iPhone, there is no reason for us to continue waiting on Era iPhone when there are things to do on the dev server. Most of the work still needed on iPhone will be shared with the development server. Because of this, we are placing the iPhone project on hold until after the development server is released.

Even though the iPhone project is being delayed, our dev project has been helped considerably by the iPhone project. For example, we've rescripted the health system we were using, including some of the stat displays, to be much more efficient (and mostly serverside). We've also made changes to the gun system and other core systems which we will move over to the dev server.

To clarify: the iPhone project is now on hold until the development server is released, and we will continue working on the new Era project now.

We are still looking for graphic artists so that we can make some changes to the tileset and start with the overworld as soon as possible.

We've been trying to sort out things with our current tile artist, plus dealing with some other staff issues lately. I'll try to get back to you by tomorrow.

Frankie 01-19-2010 11:08 PM

I don't see why you can't start the over world without the tile changes. Unless you're considering starting a whole new tileset and not just editting it (which in my opinion is a complete waste of time.)

Right now we only need basics. Sage and other tile artists have said they want to change the layout of beaches, dirt, etc. Once we have the basic layout done, we can start the levels, but anything we do before then will just have to be redone.

And I agree, a whole new tileset would be pointless. We're trying to make improvements, additions, and reorganizations, but still keep the Era feel.

If you weren't 15 years old you'd of never announced the project just because another server had made an iphone server. You would first start work on the server, have something to show, and make sure the project you're doing is very much do-able. Rather now you just gave everyone false hopes, completely unprofessional but I don't expect anything better.

Besides, you'll probably delete my post anyway for criticizing you.

I'm going to point to your age reference, realize you must be new to the Graal, and call it quits there. I've already responded to the rest of the criticisms found in your post, whether you're satisfied with the responses or not.

Graal is run by a team of volunteers who pay to make the game so you can play it. You might want to remember that before you attack staff.

I don't play the game to play it, I am just like you and prefer developing for my own amusement and to expand on how my coding is condensed, efficient, and organized. Just because you aren't being paid does not mean you have to act unprofessional.

There are a lot of reasons that we've placed the iPhone server on hold. You can nitpick any mistakes we have made to the grave, but there is no real reason for further criticism of the project or those involved when we've already seen the error of our ways and have made appropriate adjustments.

If you have problems with me as a person, I would be happy to discuss those with you privately rather than on the public forums.

The reason we're turning our attention back to the Dev server is because we feel we can do more for Era there. I'm not entirely sure how meeting this with a round of boos and told-you-sos is going to do anything to help the project or Graal in general.

The intent of this thread wasn't to announce an Era iPhone server, but more to let everyone know that we would be delaying the development on the main server. Besides, the project isn't cancelled, it is just put on hold. You act as if game developers haven't ever pushed back a deadline before

Originally the iPhone project wasn't supposed to take very long, but obviously that changed. So instead of delaying the dev server even more, we're going to finish that first and then port everything over to the iphone server.

Things will probably move more smoothly this way anyways.

We've taken into account the current economy as we've been drafting up the way the economy will flow on the new Era. This isn't really related to iPhone though, since iPhone is not intended to have a trading economy.

Vman13x 01-20-2010 02:27 AM

Hmm why announce making an era iPhone anyways if you haven't
completed the dev server?
Probably been answered not sure, feel free to delete this post if it's been answered.

Just admit that you wanted to make an iPhone server simply because you seen the success in graal classic's iPhone server and realized you were way over your head.

xnervNATx 01-20-2010 12:17 PM

so basically you intend to make era iphone have every guns sell in stores so everyone has a chance at getting it.

Yes. There might eventually be some that come from events or so, but there won't be an actual trade economy like on Era.

12171217 01-20-2010 02:36 PM

I don't see why this would take long at all. Considering you're recycling art resources from Era, it shouldn't have taken longer than a week to be very nearly finished. There's no reason why it can't be released before the new Era overhaul, becausw that's certainly not coming any time in the near future.

This is probably right, It wouldn't be a thought if they were actually working ont he dev server, usually you dont stop a project and start a new one you lose the thought process. I hate to say it but, They need to show progress other then saying things like they have.
